And Their Unique Qualities
Before we get into the different types of transformers, we want to make sure you have a clear understanding of what a transformer is and its function. Transformers are electrical devices that transfer electrical energy from one electric circuit to another, without changing the frequency.
Here are some of the different transformers out there:
Power Transformer
These transformers are used primarily to gather electricity from a power supply line to a circuit system.
Current Transformer
Current Transformers are used for the measurement of electric currents and have a primary and a secondary coil. The primary coil consists of turns of heavy wire. The secondary coil is made up of many turns of fine wire that must always be connected across ammeter terminals. While the secondary coil is connected to a source, the primary coil is not. Therefore, there cannot be an open circuit within the secondary coil.
Instrument Transformers
There are two types of instrument transformers. The first is a current transformer used to measure currents in AC voltages. The second is a potential transformer used to measure the potential differences in AC. The instrument transformers gather measurements of voltages, in ratios, without sending full power through the transformer to conserve its life.
Distribution Transformer
A distribution transformer is used to supply small amounts of power to households. This transformer is used at the end of the electrical utility’s delivery system.
